Marketing is about making things that people want as much as it is making people want things.
This post is on marketing and the power of psychology.
Here's a little open secret about us humans: WE ARE CURIOUS. Think
Garden of Eden. Understanding this truth about us and using it works. Now,
imagine a blog site titled www.nonsensegrammar.com
powered by Patrick Obiagbhon (not sure of the spelling)? You may vilify
the man Patrick (he is surely one troubled soul) but I bet on it that most people will click on the site
just to see. It's who we are.
Things are not the same or are they?
This is a post like no other. The idea for it came to me while in the loo. I have been thinking lately about the role of marketing in this post modern era and through the lens of others, I have come to appreciate a little more robustly that although people are individuals, the fact that they want to be identified with tribes put them into a bucket; a class. A lot has changed in 100 years. Indeed marketing has evolved to become what it is today. 100 years ago, the role of marketing followed the existing system of production which was quite limited.
There were few products in the market and so marketing was relatively easy. With the rise of machines came mass production which meant that with many products in the market, companies has to do more to survive. This is where we are but not for long. A new breed of technology is disrupting the value chain of production directly and marketing indirectly. With 3D Printing and its variants, production and marketing will never be the same again.
Since the garden of Eden where man displayed his pristine curiosity, we have not ceased to pay obeisance to our natural affection. We love curiosity like its other cousins in the family of emotions. It (curiosity) works in the same way love and fear works. The results may be different but the plot is the same. The world as we know it to be in the next decade will be much different. Infact, most of what we celebrate today will become artifacts. Tomorrow changes yesterday.
Here is my closing remarks. Everything will change but the true nature of man and what motivates him will remain constant come rain, come sunshine. There will always be that part of humans that can be appealed to or shall I say influenced.
