The Late Arrival: Goodbye to euphoria
In
my usual fashion, I had a difficulty naming this. I almost called it "The Commoditization of
Nigerian e-commerce segment" but changed it at the last
minute.
This is one of my numerous outbursts that I couldn't just contain within my belly
This is one of my numerous outbursts that I couldn't just contain within my belly
My
frustration is not unconnected to what I strongly perceive to be a dismal state
of things. I speak as an unrepentant evangelist and believer in all things
pro-African. And of late I have been thinking a lot about her (Africa). I have
more questions than answers. These are some of the questions in the capital of
my mind:
1. WHY IS IT THAT WE ARE NOT ADEQUATELY
REPRESENTED ON THE LIST OF POLYMATHS? (Polymaths are regarded as individuals who have moved
humanity forward intellectually).
2. WHY IS IT THAT IN THE LAST TWO
PRODUCTIVITY ERAs
(Industrialization & Internet age) AFRICA
HAS EITHER ARRIVED LATE OR NOT OPTIMALLY LEVERAGED?
3. WHY IS IT THAT IN THIS CURRENT
PRODUCTIVITY ERA (Information age) WE ARE MERELY DRAGGING ALONG?
These questions beg for answers.
On
the matter of e-commerce business in Nigeria, it’s no longer news that the
segment is full of nothing more than "cut & paste" business
models from the diaspora. It is equally laughable that the so-called biggest
players are now pursuing mindless guerrilla strategies (SEO wars, domain
phishing, User Interface (UI) copycatting, e.t.c). I would expect that these practitioners quit
the BS and get busy. It is sad enough that these folks have no formidable point
of view(s) that command attention. Talk of commoditization. I am personally
weary of the madness. We need a breath of fresh air around here for real. Now
is the time for a serious brand to claim the prize while the jokers war.
It is high time we stopped basking in the stale euphoria. We must rise above the culture of importation where all we do is replicate what is obtainable in other parts of the world. Africa must double up in the circle of intellectualism. We need the THINKERs and the DOERs to bridge the intersection of creativity and time is not a luxury. We cannot afford to play catch up in this era. A time is coming and now is when the world will come to Africa not to plunder her but to learn from her.
I have a huge burden on my heart for Africa. I desire to see Africa take its rightful place in the league of continents. I want to see Africans leading again. We have led before. It is no longer acceptable that the peoples of Africa look unto higher supranational powers to fulfil our individual and national destinies. A wise man capped up this apsiration brilliantly. He said "Africa must own its own problems. We must create and implement our solutions. We must tell our own story". I agree 100% with this philosophy.
The future is no longer a distant prospect.
